Our recently sold Aquila 44 is exceptionally comfortable and an ideal cruiser. It has an innovative layout that offers a fullbeam owner’s suite and two additional staterooms. Expansive views glazing wraps the main saloon for 360-degree horizon views.
We joined an owner of one to find out about their life at sea.
What inspired you to take ownership of this particular yacht?
There are several reasons why we decided to buy an Aquila 44. We wanted a stable motor vessel, primarily for commuting between our Lamma Island Beach House, our Apartment in Centra and an office in Tsim Sha Tsui. Hong Kong has an abundance of public piers, allowing us to travel between all these locations conveniently.
Additionally, as a sportswear company owner, I like to hold meetings onboard and my guests usually enjoy the experience a lot. The stability and versatility of the catamaran are perfect for my needs; it’s easy to get on and off board, and manoeuvring is intuitive and easy. We’re happy with it so far.
Which islands do you enjoy cruising to in Hong Kong?
Hong Kong is home to us and we cruise the region a great deal; I’ve lost count of the number of islands we’ve been to. We particularly enjoy the east side of Hong Kong because of how clean the water is there. Being members of Aberdeen Boat Club, we also like to go between Lamma and Middle Island. This convenient route offers many different beaches and locations to drop anchor for lunch and activities, such as dinghy rides.
What is your favourite part of yachting?
The freedom to explore the beautiful beaches in Hong Kong. Whether it’s Sai Kung or one of the many paradisiacal beaches, we love anchoring our boat and enjoying dining near the water’s edge. Hong Kong is also well-connected and you can access places such as Tsim Sha Tsui and Central within 30 minutes. Paddleboarding in ideal conditions adds to the enjoyment.
Do you have a memorable experience that you’d like to share?
One of my most memorable trips was to Sai Kung. We spent a few days cruising the region, enjoying many water activities. We’ve revisited many times to celebrate birthdays and special occasions on company boat trips. The calm waters, beautiful weather, and delicious food made the Sai Kung trips truly enjoyable. Staying at the WM Hotel and exploring Aberdeen always enhances the trip. Sai Kung, I would say, is my favourite destination.
Where do you spend the most time onboard?
I spend most time at the stern of the boat, on the aft deck. It’s functional and a versatile space, ideal for socialising, and listening to music. The aft deck also offers direct and gentle access to the water for swimming and paddleboarding. The meeting table, the dining table and the bedrooms are also very pleasant. There are certainly larger yachts out there, but our Aquila 44 is perfect for us. We’re very content and pleased with it.
Do you have any big trips or excursions planned?
We plan to continue to use our boat as we are now – conveniently in Hong Kong Harbor, exploring nearby beaches, deserted spots, nice restaurants, and interesting places. While we don’t have plans for longer trips to other Asian destinations, the boat adds a unique dimension to our lives. It’s not just about being in the city or on an island; we also live in between on the boat. The experience of sailing in Hong Kong, especially during special occasions like the Chinese New Year, is truly remarkable. The skyline, Sai Kung, and the entire view from the water are breathtaking.
