  • Electronic navigation has become the mainstay of safe passage whilst underway at sea. We should still practice the skills of manual navigation working up a dead reckoning, estimated position and manual pilotage planning, plotted onto manual charts as after a lightning strike at sea, this might be all you have.
  • Safety technology has increased considerably at sea in the past 10 years, with the common use of personal emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) devices. Safety should always be considered at sea and owning one of these is highly recommended.
  • There is far too much plastic in the ocean. Careful control of single-use plastics at sea should be exercised at all times.
  • I have seen many people flick cigarette ends into the sea, and I’m quick to inform them that these butts take 10 years to biodegrade and can be eaten by marine life. They are poisonous to these creatures.
  • If you can exercise safely and responsibly at sea, there’s so much fun to be had. Plus the negative ions you breathe in are sure to give you a good night’s sleep after an exciting day on the water.
