Exploring Indonesia on his Lagoon 42 – Mario

What boat do you currently own?

My current boat is a Lagoon 42 catamaran.

How did you come to buy this boat and why this one?

I am a longstanding Simpson Marine customer, so I met up with their current salesperson, who pitched the Lagoon 42 when I told him I wanted a CAT.

Where is the boat based?

The boat is currently based in Jakarta, Indonesia.

How do you use your yacht?

I tend to use the yacht weekly, and so far have completed three to five day trips.

Please share your favourite moment on your boat.

15 knots beam-reach with small or no waves, in the late afternoon/ evening – full sails, no engine noise.

Please share your most memorable trip/experience and why?

This would be in August 2018, anchored off Rakata watching Anak Krakatau going off into the night – the explosions grew louder as night fell, with the display becoming more “firey”. It was a good sail to the Krakatau area; about five hours from the Sunda Straights. My daughter and her friend were visiting from the US and we had a great long weekend fishing, swimming, and watching the fireworks at night. It was memorable because not even six months later the volcano collapsed into the ocean, creating a tsunami that transformed the surrounding islands, and the black sand beach I often anchored in front of. The boat allowed us to stay multiple nights, enabling us to enjoy a magical prehistoric place in sheer modern luxury.

What is your favourite place on board?

My favourite place is at the helm.

Which Asian cruising destination do you recommend to your fellow yachtsmen to visit?

Krakatau, and Ujung Kulon. Unique, exotic, majestic.

What are your sailing plans for the next 2-3 years?

I would like to move the boat to Lombok for one season, and maybe from there make a pass at Raja Ampat and Ternate. Long term, I plan to retire and live aboard for a while.

Why join the yachting community, what attracted you to this lifestyle?

Unfortunately, there isn’t much of a “yachting community” that I am aware of in Jakarta. I am attracted to sailing because I love exploring and doing it by harnessing the wind. I like the idea of a passage.

If you could change your boat for another in the future, what would be your next one and why?

A faster catamaran. The Lagoon 42 provides a balance of luxury and speed, with a decent range in light or no wind conditions. However, I want to go faster and would be willing to sacrifice the luxury for a faster boat.

Please share your experience of working with Simpson Marine?

In summary, great people. Specifically, my salesperson, who has always been there for me after the delivery and has always tried his best to find a solution to any problem. Overall, I’ve been very happy with Simpson Marine.

Thank you and happy sailing!
