Lagoon Catamarans: Future Thinking Design

The Lagoon catamarans brand needs no introduction. As one of the world’s leading catamaran manufacturers, with over 6000 boats now launched, Lagoon models are a familiar sight around Asia where they are a hugely popular choice for enjoying the region’s waters in a safe and relaxing way. The yard offers a range of ocean going catamarans from 40 to 78 feet, with sailing models – the 40, 42, 46, 51, 55, SIXTY 5, and SEVENTY 5 – and two motoryacht models – SIXTY 7 and SEVENTY 8 – on offer.

The recent revival of Lagoon’s 50’ line – new LG51 and LG55 models – has proven extremely popular. The LG51 is a very social boat, with a huge flybridge that covers 80% of the roof – perfect for enjoying at sea and at anchor. Other features include a forward cockpit, large main saloon with 360º views, and extended transoms.

The LG51 is Lagoon’s most forward-thinking design yet. “It was created to meet the requirements of the newest generation of owners,” says Cathy Lam, Marketing Manager APAC for Beneteau Group. The yacht makes use of sustainable raw materials, including FSC-certified wood and upholstery made from recycled materials. XXL solar panels can feature on the roof of the Lagoon 51, supplying over 3,400 watts of energy to contribute to operating the yacht’s systems, and 100% ecological and biodegradable boat maintenance kits are also supplied with each vessel.

The LG55 is similarly spacious, pairing form and function to create a home away from home. A spacious interior, with high end finishes, is complemented by easy access to the sea and an inviting flybridge, together with many other convivial spaces. She also features the latest technologies and equipment.

Lagoon is always innovating, and looking to the future and, as the LG51 shows, it is working hard to apply sustainability across the business. “Sustainability is one of the key focuses at Lagoon,” says Lam. “In recent years, we have taken a big step forward to offer catamarans that are always more environmentally friendly.”

The yard’s R&D team are researching and innovating around construction methods to help Lagoon create even more sustainable yachts, with plans to replace fibreglass with hemp fibre, and use of vacuum infusion to create lower-impact superstructures and hulls. Other important avenues being explored are hybrid propulsion solutions, to allow Lagoon users to enjoy electric alternatives without any limits to how the use their yacht.

On top of all this Lagoon is investing in its facilities, which are being certified to high standards of quality, environmental management and energy performance – from 2023 the yard’s Bordeaux site will be officially certified, in recognition of these positive steps. The team is also supporting several initiatives that care for our beautiful planet and oceans, including partnering with Anima Mundi to create a database of plastic waste on the coasts, with the assistance of Lagoon owners.

In more ways than one, Lagoon is a future-thinking brand, with a love of the seas at its heart.
