Nautor Swan 88 Wins Boat International Sustainability Award

Nautor Swan‘s recently introduced hybrid yacht, the Swan 88 DreamCatcher has been honoured with the Neptune for the ‘Eco Award’ category at the BOAT International Design & Innovation Awards. This accolade was announced at the Superyacht Design Festival in Kitzbühel, Austria, where industry leaders gathered to celebrate the most innovative and sustainable designs in yachting. The DreamCatcher, featuring a groundbreaking diesel-electric propulsion system, was recognized for its exceptional eco-friendly design and sustainability features.

Introducing the Swan 88: A New Era in Sailing Yachts

The Swan 88 made her debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival and Monaco Yacht Show, showcasing innovations rarely found on luxury sailing yachts.

Diesel-Electric Propulsion System: The yacht is equipped with a fully integrated ‘Deep Blue’ system by Torqeedo, featuring a 120kW electric drive system and 160kWh of energy storage.

Performance: The Swan 88 can achieve silent motoring at a maximum speed of 11.4 knots, providing a smooth and quiet sailing experience.

Advanced Hydrogeneration: The yacht’s ability to generate power while underway is enhanced by Deep Blue’s algorithms, which continuously monitor and adjust performance to optimize renewable energy production.

The Swan 88 combines sleek, modern aesthetics with practical features. The spacious deck and interior are designed to provide a seamless blend of luxury and functionality. The deck is divided into four distinct areas, including a guest cockpit with modular benches, a manoeuvring area with winches and steering pedestals, a new beach area at the stern, and a sunbathing or sunset lounge forward of the mast.

The interiors, designed by Misa Poggi, feature natural materials like linen, cotton, and leather in light, natural colours, emphasising comfort and harmony. The hull and deck are constructed from carbon fibre epoxy using Sprint® lamination technology, ensuring strength and durability while keeping the yacht lightweight.

Eco-Friendly Innovations: Leading the Way in Sustainability

The Swan 88 represents a significant leap forward in yacht design and technology, allowing her to stand out with the impressive eco-friendly features, which contributed to its recognition with the Eco Award. This elegant sailing yacht is equipped with advanced propulsion technology, featuring a Deep Blue system by Torqeedo that includes a 120kW electric drive system and 160kWh of energy storage. This system contributes to the yacht’s capability of motoring silently at a top speed of 11.4 knots, offering a smooth and quiet journey, minimising noise pollution and enhancing onboard tranquillity. The Deep Blue’s algorithms ensure optimal renewable energy production with minimal impact on sailing speed, allowing the yacht to harness wind power effectively and contribute to its sustainability credentials.

  • Renewable Energy Production: In hydrogeneration mode, the yacht can produce wind-powered energy, minimising the impact on sailing speed while ensuring sustainable operation.
  • Battery-Only Operation: The propulsion system allows the yacht to run on batteries alone at full speed, making it possible to maintain hotel and sailing operations without relying on external power sources.
  • Self-Sufficiency: The yacht’s design enables it to remain entirely self-sufficient, with sailing capable of regenerating enough power to support all onboard systems.
  • Future Adaptation: Nautor Swan is exploring the adaptation of this propulsion system across its entire range, from the Swan 51 to the maxi range, to further enhance sustainability in sailing.

Giovanni Pomati, CEO of Nautor Swan, expressed his pride in the achievement, stating: “I’m really proud that DreamCatcher has been awarded the ‘Eco Award’ for the yacht delivering the best concept in terms of eco, sustainability and self-sufficiency. This is very important for us at Nautor Swan. We trusted our partners – first of all the owners – who challenged us with such a big project. Then, together with Torqeedo, we developed a solution that helped us to achieve our goal.”

He continued: “Now we want to extend this technology throughout the range, making sailing even more sustainable than it already is, while also exploring hydrogeneration propulsion.”

The Swan 88 DreamCatcher’s recognition at the BOAT International Design & Innovation Awards highlights Nautor Swan’s capability of pioneering sustainable solutions in the yachting industry.
