Russell grew up sailing on the east coast of England. As an adult he had a diverse career path beginning as a police firearms and diving specialist, which 16 years later led him to the Caribbean as a Padi Course Director and later his experience in sales, customer service and hospitality landed him the position of Assistant General Manager of a luxury resort. After 15 years on Grenada and on the flip of a coin, He went in search of a new home in Asia.
Having settled in Thailand he worked as the Head of English and Foreign STCW training at a Maritime college before joining a sailing school and yacht brokerage company in Pattaya, where he spent three years as the School and business development manager and a yacht broker.
From a young age Alfie has been passionate about sailing and competed with much success at local, national and international level in youth, student and open events in sailing dinghies.
Alongside competitive sailing he has taught sailing since 2000 initially in dinghies, later in powerboats and yachts. His enthusiasm to share the passion and experience of sailing drove Alfie to study Watersports Studies & Management at Southampton Solent University, during these studies he also taught sailing and power boating on the South Coast of the UK coaching beginners to elite athletes.
After completing his studies Alfie was recruited by Beijing Sailing Centre in 2008 to help develop the first sailing center in China into one of the leading centers in Asia with several bases across the country with customers exceeding 1000 a day at times. Travelling around South East Asia to compete in the Asian Yachting Grand Prix, an opportunity to develop another sailing program for Phuket Yacht Club presented itself, which he jumped at the chance to help another group to explore their yachting freedom. Phuket Yacht Club Sailing School now has a thriving youth sailing program. Due to the global pandemic and family circumstances, Alfie parted ways with Phuket Yacht Club and returned to his home country of Scotland to teach sailing on the beautiful West Coast’s Inner and Outer Hebrides, including expedition trips to Ireland, Iceland and Azores.
Alfie not only has a passion for teaching sailing but also competes in regattas and sailing offshore. He has competed at the highest level across many different sailing disciplines including; Asian Yachting Grand Prix 2 time winner successively, Coronation Cup (TOG regatta) 3 time winner successively (firsts team ever to do this), multiple podium finishes at China Cup International Regatta, countless wins in the Firefly 850 sports catamaran and multihull divisions in Phuket regattas. With over 30,000 nautical miles logged offshore as a delivery skipper specializing in racing yachts and skippering cruises throughout the beautiful scenery of Asia on vessels up to 100 foot, Alfie has a very rounded experience of sailing.
Having joined the Simpson Marine Sailing Academy team, he is keen to share his sailing knowledge with more sailors, be it the beginning principles of sailing, performance sailing or coaching to compete in regattas. Let’s get on the water to enjoy yachting freedom!
