Exhilarating regatta racing – William Woon

In November 2017 I joined the Simpson Marine team onboard an Ericson 36 in the second leg of the Raja Mudu Regatta (Division 6). The second exhilarating regatta racing race began around 12 noon, racing from Pangkor Island to Penang Island. Lastly, the third and final leg took us from Penang to Langkawi. Thus, it was a very rewarding sailing experience. We were able to use the wind alone to sail all day and night, taking turns at the helm and resting in between. The second leg was important as it was compulsory to qualify. We did our best to tackle the winds against us and the low wind conditions.

Exhilarating regatta racing was such a fun experience. Our captain and team did a fantastic job as this was the first time for everyone to take part in sailing and racing in the Raja Muda Regatta. We constantly had to tack to make sure we were on course as our aim was to make good time on the second leg. Next, when we arrived in Penang the whole team was delighted to have achieved the completion of the second leg. Aiming for a podium position in the final leg,  we ended up coming second in Division Six for the Penang to Langkawi leg – an amazing feeling!

It was such a beautiful area to be racing in and we got to enjoy more of Langkawi and the islands in the around-the-harbour race, with beautiful views. Most importantly we gained new experiences with sailing. My biggest tip is to always make sure your yacht is in good working condition. as it really pays off when you are using it. Finally, the regatta was a fantastic overall experience
Finally, our Malaysia team is looking forward to participating in the upcoming 2018 Raja Muda Regatta – we hope to see some of our boat owners there too.
