What Are The Best Times of the Year to Sail in Thailand?

Thailand is truly one of the most beautiful locations to sail luxury yachts on the planet. The stunning natural beauty of the tropics, contrasted with the ultra-modernity and bustle of Bangkok, the alluring ancient culture, and the divine decadence of the luxury spa resorts await you at each mooring and combine perfectly, like the sweetness and the spice in a steaming bowl of freshly cooked Pad Thai.

The shimmering tropical coastline is idyllic and enchanting during the hot summer days, and the bays and marinas light up with life as the fishing villages and night markets erupt into vibrance once the sun sets. Finding what you want here, all comes down to timing. Smooth crystalline waters from around November, lasting through the rising heat until the monsoon breaks and smaller yachts batten down the hatches or head back to the harbour.

UNDERSTANDING THAILAND’S WEATHER PATTERNS

Thailand has three main seasons. The cool season starts around November to February, the hot season between March and May, and the rainy season from around June to October.

During the cool season, the sailing conditions are tranquil, relaxed and temperate, making for ideal sailing and exploration of the vibrant coastline. The temperature then steadily increases throughout the following months until the monsoons break around June, and the conditions can become volatile.

THE IDEAL MONTHS FOR SMOOTH SAILING

From around November onwards, the waters around Thailand are mostly crystal clear turquoise and a pleasure to sail. Both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea are exquisite locations, with a plethora of natural beauty and vibrant local culture to immerse yourself in. The coasts around Thailand are picture postcard-perfect during these months.

MONSOONS ARE NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART

The heat steadily rises throughout the year till the crescendo of the monsoon season brings dramatic tropical storms southward over Thailand, illuminating the night skies with purple and pink-hued lightning and occasionally flooding the streets beneath the deluge. While beautiful and awe-inspiring, these weather conditions make Thailand’s waters best avoided during these months by all but the most experienced and well-equipped sailors.

THE LAND OF SMILES

Thailand has many wonderful festivals throughout the year, from the enchanting light festival of Loi Krathong in November to the barmy nationwide water fights of Songkran in April. The Thais enjoy life to the full and the famous smile certainly becomes infectious.

National holidays in Thailand are celebrations, and they are numerous throughout the year, so it’s always a good idea to research what delights await you on shore when you disembark for a day or perhaps longer.

OFF-SEASON ADVENTURES

In the monsoon months, from around June to October, the weather can turn very quickly and pose risks to inexperienced sailors. However, if you’re confident in your seafaring abilities and keen for adventure, these months can offer a unique perspective of the region when viewed from the deck of a luxury yacht.

With less tourism, these months can open up the true cultural experience Thailand has to offer. Wildlife excursions from remote jungle villages, tours of Buddhist monasteries and ancient temples, abandoned beaches and quaint fishing villages feel all the more intimate out of season.

Thailand is a land of plenty, with some of the most beautiful striking coastlines in Southeast Asia. Whether you’re scuba diving in the crystal clear waters off Koh Tao or taking the jet skis out to get a closer look at the untouched coastlines of hidden gems like Ko Khlum in the east of the Gulf, on a Simpson Marine luxury yacht you take the opulence with you.

In the cooler months, the sailing is easy and smooth, and smiles await you at every anchorage. As the temperature rises, sailing conditions remain enjoyable and relaxed, however, the heat can be draining, so activities tend to be fewer, and relaxation takes the fore. In the kinetic and exciting monsoon season, the tourists abate, and the magic and allure of Thailand’s natural beauty is revealed. The increased winds can aid in sailing. However, the rain, choppy waters and restricted mooring can pose challenges.
